| Name: | Wayne Hopkins | |||||||||
| Bio: |
Weaknesses: Easily distracted from the task in hand, but as pretty much everything - including work - forms a distraction from something else, he manages to get everything he needs to done, regardless. Wayne can be a little pretentious. He forms judgements regarding people's intelligence that are not necessarily true and can be somewhat moralising. He also can be unintentionally harsh and a bit dim concerning girls. A bit quiet. Can sometimes become moody and broody. Unable to say 'no' to anything, particularly if people want his help with something. Strengths: hard-working (well, he is a Hufflepuff) and clever, artistic and yet in some cases highly practical. He is a nice bloke and will go out of his way to be helpful to people, particularly his friends and family. He is skilled on the Quidditch field, and with a guitar. He is authentic and genuine, and sometimes punctuates his usual seriousness with an oddball sense of humour. He cares a lot about his family and friends, and will put almost everybody else firmly before himself. He also has a wide vocabulary, although people who spend a lot of time with him might not consider that such a good thing. Family: Father - Robert Hopkins, muggle, manual labourer. Wayne loves his father very much, and is keenly aware of how much he owes him. Were it not for Robert, Wayne would never have fully appreciated books or the arts. At the same time, however, Wayne pities him for never having had much of a chance himself and does not understand his mental health problems. Furthermore, the very act of trying to educate his children has driven them further from him as it means none have much in common with him. Robert, however, is very proud of Wayne and wants nothing more than for his children to be happy and comfortable. Mother - Catherine Hopkins, muggle-born witch, housewife. Wayne is inspired by how hard his mother works, and her quiet devotion to the family. Sometimes he thinks she is a little too saint-like and she shouldn't pamper to his father's whims so much. Catherine, too, is proud of Wayne and hopes that he will be able to succeed in making things better for the whole family. Unlike Robert, who is proudest when Wayne composes a beautiful poem, Catherine is proudest when he makes sacrifices for people he loves. Elder brother - Michael Hopkins, non-magical, alcoholic, long-term unemployed. Wayne avoids his brother as much as possible. He wants for him to be happy and will do anything he can for him, but he does not understand him and does not like being around him. Michael is resentful of his clever, magical younger brother and tends to swing between covert and open hostility. Younger brother - Anthony Hopkins, magical. He is quiet and underconfident, but clever, having a particularly keen understanding of politics, economics, and social policy. Wayne is very protective of his younger brother and tries to shield him from the worst hardships of poverty and Michael's temper. Anthony looks up to Wayne as his main role model. Orphaned cousin - Charlotte Hopkins, non-magical. A sweet and cheerful child, likes ponies and Disney Princesses. She is affectionate to Wayne, as she is with all members of the family, and views his magical powers with wonder. Enjoys listening to him play and sing for hours on end. Wayne in turn enjoys spending time with her, particularly teaching her. He is keen to give her a bright future. Friends: Hannah Abbott - Wayne is very fond of Hannah. He's not religious himself - his Marxist father brought him up to see religion as the opiate of the masses - but he respects her religion because it seems to give her inner strength and drive to help others. He finds her optimism inspiring (as he is prone to gloom sometimes) and her appreciation of beauty at times akin to his own. Megan Jones - Wayne has always gotten on well with Megan. Though in many ways they are opposites - loud versus quiet, abrasive versus accomodating, fun-loving versus serious - they respect each other and share enough in common that these personality quirks are complimentary rather than clashing. Both beaters for the Hufflepuff Quidditch team, they practised and practised until they knew each others moves well enough to be able to predict with frightening accuracy the other's actions on the pitch, and could work together to play to their respective strengths. Zacharias Smith - Wayne gets quite impatient with Zacharias sometimes. He doesn't view him as a bad person, exactly. Wayne would class himself as a pragmatist rather than idealist, so does not despise cowardice except in excess (e.g. pushing the first years out of the way in DH, would count as excess. Simply not fighting in the battle would not). Wayne respects Zacharias as a Quidditch player, but Zacharias can be so rude and unplesant at times. That said, Wayne has sympathy with Zacharias' skepticism as in some ways it reminds him of his father's. The upshot is, sometimes they get along, but have never been particularly close. Ernie Macmillan - Wayne has a great respect for Ernie's intelligence and work ethic. In the run up to OWLs, Wayne was one of the few not irritated or panicked by Ernie's boasting of how much work he was doing. Instead, Wayne made a point of hanging around him, hoping that near to Ernie he wouldn't be able to get distracted by non-work things so much. He is also not bothered by Ernie's pompousness; in fact, as he is pretentious himself, he barely notices it. Justin Finch-Fletchley - Though both raised amongst muggles, Justin and Wayne are from different worlds. Wayne is sometimes irritated by Justin's complete ignorance of the worries and concerns of being poor. Wayne has had to overcome some inverse snobbery of his own in order for the two to be friends. They manage it, but have never had much in common. Appearance: Wayne is medium height, of slim build but with strong muscles - particularly in his arms, hence being a beater. He has floppy dark brown hair and a fringe he sometimes likes to hide behind. Other times, when feeling bolder, he wears it swept off his face. His eyes are brown and his brows heavy but not abnormally so. He is a little bohemian in his dress, but not enough to particularly stand out (he hopes). Wayne has been described as 'handsome' and 'cute' by the opposite sex, but usually by his friends. Other people probably don't really notice him that much, although he is the sort of boy to get crushed on by younger girls as 'the strong silent type.' PB: Ryan Donowho Sexuality: Straight. No relationships as yet. He has the potential to be something of a romantic, although he usually sees girls as like his other friends, just prettier, and wouldn't think to make a move on them. Achievements: beater for Hufflepuff Quidditch team, '94-'97. Good OWLs results (mostly As and Es, with an O in Astronomy and a P in Herbology because he kept forgetting to water his plants). No NEWTs as he was not allowed to attend school for his final year. Hobbies: reading anything and everything he can get his hands on, playing the guitar and the bass guitar, Quidditch, flying, writing poetry, experimenting, going for walks, appreciating beautiful things. Biography: Robert Hopkins, Wayne's father, is from a traditionalist working class Welsh family - he claims they are descended from Wil Hopcyn, but Wayne is dubious. For his early working life, he worked at the steelworks but was laid off before Wayne was a year old, and found it difficult to find another job in the recession, which was not helped by his tendency to slide into depression and stop looking. For the last few years he has worked at the railway. He was always determined that his children should have a good education - he himself enjoyed reading but hated the structure of school, being a tad temperamental - and inducted them into the local library before they could walk. Wayne's mother, Catherine, is a muggle-born witch, educated at Hogwarts, who returned home to her family in Swansea and met Robert at Oystermouth Castle during a production of Midsummer Nights' Dream. To integrate back into muggle society with her husband, she uses magic rarely, only for some household chores. She is a housewife. She briefly worked in a shop in Diagon Alley whilst Robert was unemployed, but found that this shattered his self-esteem as the man of the house, so has not done so since. Wayne has two brothers and a female cousin who lives with them as a sister. Wayne's family were pitifully poor whilst he was growing up. He valued the few books and other possessions he did actually own because he had to take great care of them. He inherited his guitar from his older brother and his bass from a cousin; both are well-battered, being secondhand even before entering the family. Wayne has always felt it his duty to work hard so as to earn enough money to send some back to his family.When Wayne received his Hogwarts letter, his friends and neighbours were told he had won a scholarship to an elite private school - which was true, after all, in a fashion. He was intensely nervous in the beginning and it was several months before he really made friends. He was sorted into Hufflepuff despite his bookish tendencies and began the long hard slog of making his family proud. Luckily, he enjoyed lessons, and took part in as many extra-curricular activities as possible, including Quidditch and music. He tended to be neutral as regards to Harry Potter's current status (the boy who lived? The boy who lied? The heir of Slytherin?), partly because of a habit of being oblivious to things that are going on, and partly because he does not like to express opinions on things he feels he does not know enough about. As a halfblood living amongst muggles, however, he was always against Bloodism, so had firm opinions on Voldemort. After the takeover, Catherine Hopkins was sent to Azkaban as part of the muggle-born purges. She was accused of murdering a wizard and stealing his wand. Robert attempted to punch the Deatheaters that came to get her and narrowly missed the Avada Kedavra curse aimed in response. Wayne promptly knocked his father unconscious and apologised to her captors, offering to fetch Catherine's wand along with his own and his brother's. As a pragmatist he knew the futility of resistance and wanted as little of his family dead or imprisoned as possible. Catherine seemed to understand and her last words to him were that he must take care of the family. Wayne returned to the muggle life he had known, although with no muggle qualifications he was forced to work on the till at Woolworths, a job far beneath his ability. A year and a half later, the Deatheaters returned for Wayne and Anthony: Catherine had claimed that she stole the boys wands for them and they had been acting innocently, but it was decided by some Ministry Officials reviewing the sentencing that nevertheless, since they had been wielding magic and were muggles, they would have to be imprisoned for their crimes. They both went quietly. Since then, Wayne has sat in his cell in Azkaban, attempting to see a kind of beauty in his prison, composing and memorising dark poetry, singing miserable songs and, of course, worrying himself sick about his family and friends. | |||||||||
